So you have decided to join your first fun run. Congrats! The energy at the starting line, the crowd, the finisher’s medal: it is a great way to give your training a goal. Before all that, though, there is the first hurdle: registration.
Here is everything you need to know to sign up, prepare and enjoy your first race in the Philippines.
Step 1: Pick the Right Race
Philippine fun runs usually offer 3K, 5K, 10K, 21K (half marathon) and sometimes 42K (full marathon) categories. If you are new, start with a 3K or 5K. Then consider:
- Date: give yourself at least 6 to 8 weeks to train for your first 5K.
- Location and gun start: many races start at 4 or 5 a.m. Can you get to the venue that early?
- Theme: charity runs, color runs, night runs, character runs. Pick one that excites you.
- Route: flat city routes (BGC, MOA, CCP) are easier for first-timers than hilly or trail courses.
To see what is coming up, browse the running events calendar. You can filter for races where registration is still open.
Step 2: Online or In-Store Registration?
Online
Most races now register through online platforms or the organizer’s own website. You fill out a form, pick your category and singlet size, pay by card, GCash, Maya or bank transfer, and get a confirmation email. Fast and convenient.
In-Store
Some races still offer registration at partner stores, usually sports shops in malls. You fill out a paper form and pay in cash or card. Handy if you prefer cash, and you sometimes get your race kit on the spot.
Tip: early-bird rates and singlet sizes sell out. Register as soon as you have decided.
Step 3: What to Prepare
- Personal details: full name as on your ID, birthday, and an emergency contact person and number.
- Valid ID: some races ask for it at kit claiming.
- Payment: card, e-wallet or cash, depending on the channel.
- Singlet size: check the organizer’s size chart. Race singlets often run small or large.
- Waiver: read it. It usually confirms you are fit to run. If you have a heart or medical condition, get a check-up first.
Step 4: Claim Your Race Kit
Most races hold a kit claiming period a week or two before race day. Bring your confirmation email and ID (or an authorization letter if someone claims for you). Your kit usually includes your race bib with timing chip, singlet, and sponsor freebies. Check that your bib category matches what you registered for.
Gear on a Budget
You do not need expensive gear to finish a fun run.
- Shoes: your most important purchase. A comfortable, well-fitting pair from a reputable brand matters more than the newest model. Try them on in the afternoon, when your feet are slightly bigger, and jog a few steps in the store.
- Clothes: skip cotton. Moisture-wicking shirts and shorts reduce chafing.
- Extras: a cap, sunscreen and a small bottle for the warm-up.
Sports sections in SM and Ayala malls, specialty stores and official brand stores on Shopee and Lazada all have budget options. Buy from official stores to avoid fakes.
Race Etiquette: Para Walang Asaran
- Start where you belong. Walkers and slower runners start toward the back. Your chip time only starts when you cross the start mat.
- Do not block the road. If you are running with friends, avoid a wall of five people side by side.
- Water stations: slow down, move to the side, grab a cup, step away from the table, then drink. Throw cups in the bins.
- Music: keep the volume low enough to hear marshals and runners passing you.
- Need to walk? Move to the side first, then slow down.
Race Day Checklist
- Bib pinned on the front of your shirt, chip intact
- Shoes and clothes you have already trained in
- Light breakfast you have tried before a run
- Arrive 45 to 60 minutes before gun start
- After the finish: keep walking, rehydrate, eat, stretch
